After seeing some reviews of OrganiGrowHairCo products online, I decided to try my first product from the range – the Vegan GrowGurt Leave In. For a long time, I was skipping leave in conditioners from my routine. The results I got without leave ins were variable; if I had layered and sealed sufficiently, my hair would look and feel moisturised, but a lot of the time my hair would become dry quite quickly after wash day.
After a bit of research, I discovered that using a water based leave in as the first step in product application provides hair with the moisture that it needs. This moisture is then ‘sealed’ in using other products, such as oils/butters. Let’s just say this revelation was the epiphany I needed to start incorporating leave-ins into my routine. Some people can get away with skipping a leave-in, but I see a noticeable difference in my hair if I jump straight to oils, butters and gels.
The OrganiGrowHairCo Leave-In was part of an experiment I did with leave in conditioners. I chose a low, middle and high budget leave in to see which one my hair liked the most and the OrganiGrowHairCo was my higher budget option.
Some information about the product
I purchased this ‘Organigrow Vegan GroGurt Whipped Leave In Conditioning Cream’ from NaturalisticProducts.co.uk. OrganiGrow have both hair and skin care products and I really love the back story behind the brand. The co-creators moved into creating their own products with natural, organic ingredients in mind after a bad hair cut, health and life experiences. Here is some information about the brand and this leave in:
- Suitable for all hair porosities
- Organic, Vegan and Cruelty Free
- No Sulfates, Parabens, Mineral Oils, Dyes, Drying Alcohols or Unnatural Fragrance
- Made in the USA
- A black owned business
The first ingredient in this product is Spring Water, which is what I would look for when selecting a water based leave-in. I really like that all the ingredients have a brief explanation so you can understand what they are and where they have derived from. It contains ingredients that claim to both grow and retain healthy hair, including Black Seed and Chebe oil. The smell is light, sweet and delicate, I love it! It reminds me of the foam raspberry mushroom sweets. The texture is medium thickness, smooth and surprisingly lightweight – GrowGurt is a perfect term as the consistent reminds me of yogurt. It spreads really well through damp hair. If you have fine or low density hair, you may wish to use a little less, or emulsify the product before application.
How to use it
The instructions state to part hair into 4-8 sections and then rake through the leave in. It then recommends to use other OrganiGrow products to finish the styling routine.
After applying this to four sections of my hair, I added a curl cream, butter and then a gel by other brands. I left to air dry, and then stretched my hair overnight in a bun and satin bonnet.
Here is what my hair looked like when nearly dry and then the next day with some nice curl patterns!
I was really happy with my results using this leave-in. The difference in the moisture levels is next level, it doesn’t really compare to anything I’ve used before. I used styling products that I have used before in combination with this product, so I am confident the good results are due to this leave-in. The best part of using this product is that my results lasted until day NINE. Here is what day eight hair looked like, it was still wearable, soft and shiny, even without a refresh
This was £23.99 for 8oz (nearly 230ml) so it’s on the more expensive side than other products I have tried. A little goes a long way with this product, so I think it will last me for a long time. I would love to try alongside other OrganiGrow products, but I think I will build my collection over time as they are quite pricey.
Overall, I think the price is more than justified for the ingredients and the fact that this product has been developed in the US and therefore imported over to the UK, which will be reflected in the price of UK stockists. The results for me were incredible and it’s now the first product I say when people ask me for my current favourite product. I have used this in between wash days for some quick moisture and it works really well this way too. This product is cheaper if you are based in the US and purchase directly from the OrganiGrow website ($21 or £15 at the time of publishing this blog). I’m really looking forward to using this product more and more and expanding my collection.
Although this product is on the thicker side, I don’t think that means its not suitable for fine hair or low density hair. However, it may be best to emulsify or start with a small amount to prevent hair from being weighed down.
